I USED to be a big fan of both of these folks, but since they mistreated *my own mother* so badly, refused to answer any email and basically have stolen money without delivering the goods, all I can say is spare yourself the agony and wated money and time of dealing with these folks and shop elsewhere. MyTreo.net has been good so far. Let me know if anyone else has been mistreated by these guys and maybe we can have some sort of legal action brought against this theft.

Comment: Hey guys, I have always recommended your site to people I have spoken to, but given the way my mother has been mistreated on one of her orders and the fact that she NEVER received any kind of a response from you or the developer (for Botzam Backup) and now her 30 bucks is wasted on a useless piece of software, I am not inclined to recommend you anymore. I will give you one last chance at a response, after that I will have to talk about my experience here on my reviews and correspondance and recommend someone else to buy software from... any chance at making this right?

Actually, there is a version for the 650 but it uses a Java plugin that does nasty things to the phone. So tread carefully here. The Palm OS doesn't work terribly well with the Java stufff (well, in my experience, your mileage may vary)

I got this email when I was out eating dinner Friday night... so, as I spend the crapload of money to have an unlimited wireeless connection on my Treo 600, I use the hell out of it and downloaded the app directly. Well, apparently Google has failed me (and a rare thing that is). The app directly downloaded from their site did NOT want to load on the Treo. Third time was NOT the charm. Anyhoo, I went back to my old standby of myTreo.net and downloaded it from there. No problemo. As for Google maps on the Treo, frankly anything has to be an improvement over MapQuest. It was useless on my screen. Google maps is a pretty faithful reproduction of the web version. Zooming in and out, satellite view... its all briliant. This is a must for Treos.

I get this error (bolded) when I try to sync with gmail ( removed my email name to prevent SPAM, it does display properly in the actual log):

Here's the code and a post from Rojo's Kevin Burton. "I wanted to unlock my phone so that I could buy a prepaid GSM SIM chip to use my phone in Thailand for cheap. I have a Sprint network card that plugs into my notebook so I can get on the Internet anywhere. That is the good news. The bad news is, it’s pretty slow. It is just now receiving radio signals originally broadcast by Marconi.
My phone is a Treo 600. It’s a bit too big, but I like that it syncs easily with my computers, and it has everything in it — contacts, calendars, email, and a really, really bad camera, which I call “The CrapCam.” I take pictures on it and post them to my blog, mainly because the quality of the photos enrages the blog readers and causes them to rant in an entertaining manner.

PalmOne Raises Treo 650 GSM Price

PalmOne seems bound and determined to slough off all the good will anyone ever had for them, with so many customer-last maneuvers you'd think they were run by Steve Jobs or something. Last night, PalmOne raised the price on their unlocked, unsubsidized Treo 650 GSM model from $599 to $699, citing a 'pricing error.' That's total and complete bullshit and everyone knows it—something as important as the price of a launching product gets checked and re-checked.

The increase means one of two things: so many people were buying the generic GSM version that they felt they could milk them for another $100 without worrying about losing sales (doubtful), or Cingular put the squeeze on them, worried that too many people would get the unlocked model instead of tying themselves to a carrier for a year or two. Either way, it's a total slap in the face to people who have been waiting for this product for months, although they should be used to the ill treatment by now. After the RAM problems and broken Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking, both of which Palm promised to address but never followed through on, Palm users should feel properly put in their place.

I have a Cingular Treo 650 on the way for testing. I think I'm just going to send it back, unopened.

Quite a few people have been waiting for Cingular to get the PalmOne Treo 650, since up to now the only way to get a hold of the smartphone is to sign up with Sprint's CDMA service. It's definitely going to happen soon—there have just been too many signals heralding its release this week to think otherwise—but this is the first actual, branded picture I've seen of the phone. It looks like a Treo 650... with a Cingular logo. Amazing, I know.

The Treo 650 on Cingular should support EDGE, the stop-gap GSM data speed up that should put the Cingular model's data speeds on par with Sprint's (give or take). Until Verizon drops the price of their EV-DO offerings (and gets an EV-DO Treo, hopefully), Cingular's pretty much the only other mid-range data speed game in town.

Oh ho! Looks like Shadowmite from Treo Central has done it: Wi-Fi drivers for the wireless PalmOne SD card have been ported to the Treo 650. They're being hosted at Uneasy Silence, but I didn't get a chance to try them. My 650 is all boxed up to go back to Sprint, and I don't have an SD card anyway. Anybody using these yet? What's the battery life like?

On the latest version of the popular Treo smart phone, PalmOne made two important changes to the system's design. The device now uses flash memory, rather than DRAM, to store data. Flash memory is nonvolatile, which means it can store data without a constant supply of electricity and protect that data in the event of a battery failure or unintended shutdown. PalmOne users have clamored for flash memory for years, and were finally accommodated with the release of the Tungsten T5 and Treo 650. In order to use flash memory, PalmOne had to switch the file system technology that decides how files are stored. The Treo 650 now uses the NVFS (nonvolatile flash system) file system to store data in clusters. on my Treo today (Truth About Cats and Dogs) and it didn't even put a tiny dent into my battery life. This is so cool. The only thing that I have seen as an issue so far is that occasionally the movies (.avi format) on my card get corrupted and I have to re-copy them onto the card from the computer. It really isn't a big deal, and it also might be from all the messing about I'm doing testing different sizes and such, but it is possible.

Watching DVD's on my Treo...

Well, what do you know... I'm watching a movie on my Treo. I got PocketDVD, MMPlayer (the Treo skin sucks, by the way) and am happily encoding my DVD's for viewing on the Treo. The settings I use to encode the movie are ~~272x176(48k pixels~~ 160x160). ~~My friend Tex has a Tungsten C and he uses 320x217 or so for his screen.~~ (NOTE:We have since switched both to the same setting, its a lot faster and the visible difference isn't all that great. The tradeoff is definitely in favor of performance.) There are distinct differences between the units. I also set my viewer in MMPlayer for best fit in the full screen mode and it looks really nice. No skipping, the sound is great (but the Treo has some seriously good speaker action... compared to the Tungsten, its amazing.) Here is their set of instructions on optimizing the output for your purposes. I found a PQI 1 gig SD card the other day fro $109 (though Amazon has a 512 SD card, I didn't see a 1 gig version) and I can probably fit 10 movies on the card easily. I'll put some miscellaneous sitcom episodes on there, too. (and a note about transferring the resultant files to your SD card: their instructions [here]. "We recommend to use a memory card reader to copy & paste the output file into your Palm. This can be several times faster than Hotsync." Heh, I think they mean several million times faster... 1 MP3 file copying via HotSync takes a LONG TIME to copy and that's only about 3M. Can you imagine how log 80M takes? But his has wifi and mine doesn't. grr.

(The MP3 is from an old Pace picante ad... the cowboys sitting around the campfire denigrating salsa made in New York City rather than San Antonio, Tx.) What I want is a little add in file that automagically does this for all the area codes. It doesn't need to play cute little MP3 files (though that would be a bonus) but at least displaying the state with major city and possibly a cute little picture of the state flower/mammal/creepy crawly/what have you... Then I could just go download an update for the file every month or so when the add new area codes.

I'm very pleased with this case actually. I really haven't had to take the Treo out for any reason for at least a month or so now. The basics of the case are: - belt clip with removeable post that looks like a screw, but doesn't have the annoying quality of unscrewing itself at an inopportune time. - camera hole for the lens (you do need to have the detachable belt clip part off to take a picture (it interferes just a bit, but if you have the on your belt still, there's no problem) - there is a slot for an SD card on the inside of the cover, it faces the contacts out, which doesn't seem right to me, but it hasn't affected my spare SD card adversely. - there is a hole in front to access the 'answer button' and you can take a call without having to open the case (if you aren't curious who is calling) - there is a clot on the bottom for the sync/charge cable and the headset. well formed and fits without having to jiggle things around. - an ear 'outdent' with a hole so you can hear... fits nicely and I've noticed no quality impairment of sound when I'm on a call. - a side opening for the ringer /sound up and down buttons. Large enough to get your fingers in there to raise or lower the volume, but not big enough to accidentally do it. - just under the lens hole is a speaker phone vent opening. - the top is open for the antenna, SD slot, power, IR port and ringer button. It has a slight lip over the latter to make sure you don't accidentally turn off your phone, but you can still get to it in a pinch without having to open the cover... but I don't' ever bother to do this. I was at IKEA the other day sending an SMS to someone and this guy walked up to me and asked me about the case. The one thing I remember about the conversation was that he asked me specifically about the ringer button and if I had ever lost an SD card. I never really need to switch to silent mode without opening the cover and I've never lost an SD card. So I don't know how helpful this will be for those of you with these problems, all I can say it that I never had those issues. Maybe its the case, maybe I'm just not an animal with my Treo. I've been using a Palm device since they came out in 1997 (I still have my Pilot Personal... with the upgrade and the clear case.... good times, eh?) and so I am mindful of my little device. I'd really like to hear if any of you have issues with this... When the case is open, I can pretty easily type (well, as well as I can type on the keyboard considering I am a complete lummox thumb typing anyway) and do anything including play 72 straight games of solitaire. Frankly, I like the fact that all of these features make it so that I don't notice the case... and the fact that I don't have to take the Treo out of it for any function is probably the best advertisement for this case. 5/5 ...Go get one now!

That's a pretty cool idea, considering it takes forever to load things on the SD card throught the conduit. I tend to put mine in the card reader when I want to speed things up a bit. I use SplashPhoto right now for pictures and slideshows, and it seems to load pretty quickly (though it converts the photos on the desktop app, so it might be a moot point) but if you are frustrated with the distinct lack of speed on your load, this might do the trick for you.

that I am sometimes taking blog fodder from elsewhere and feeding it into here. Just for the record,I still am mad about no wi-fi. But, it seems that I have found no suitable replacement for my Treo 600. The case I bought earlier is cool, I use the organizer incessantly (but that's no different than the last 7 years of my being a Palm OS junkie) and my phone works well. I would really like to have wi-fi, but I'll not think about it too hard for now.

You know how they have those audio programs that you rent or are given at museums that tell you all about the displays etc.? I want one that works on my Treo. Mp3 format would be cool, but a little app that can be beamed to my Treo (and could expire if they were going to be all paranoid about it) or put onto an SD card (either rented or on mine) for the day. Then I could also have an interactive app for the show with feedback items (sent somewhat like AvantGo has on their surveys) or order forms for related collateral (books, tshirts, reproductions, etc.) Or even expanding the whole tourism thing: walking tours (they have some on Audible.com [Soundwalk: Lower East Side, New York]) or digitizing those packs of cards with little focused walking tours in Paris or NYC.

I thought you and your readers might like to know that you can indeed add MIDI ringtones from your SD card. It isn't required to use the Treo internet connection. Copy the .mid (ringtone) file to your SD card. In the built-in internet browser you should be able to enter the URL, file:///path/to/file.mid (you are actually directing the browser to process a file on the SD card rather than from the internet). For example: File not in a SD card directory: file:///file.mid File in an SD Card directory: file:///dir/file.mid File in an SD Card subdirectory: file:///dir1/dir2/file.mid Then just choose save, you can rename the tone if you like. SUCH MORONS. I can't even tell them of my extreme displeasure. So I'll share it all with you. To the folks at palmOne, You should be ashamed of yourselves. I can’t express the disgust and utter contempt I feel for you without resorting to words that are not what I consider language fit for civilized society. I used to be a great fan of your hardware, I worked as an evangelist for the palm OS and all things palm related. Your response to this was to treat me like dirt. And I’m not exaggerating. I’ve never been so rudely dealt with in my life, and I’ve been a Technical Support engineer before... I know from abuse. So, I told myself that staying in an abusive relationship was futile and I went to the Handspring side of the world. I could have cared less if the worst things in the world befell Palm, it was just desserts for bad customer service and a complete unwillingness to have even a remotely clear idea of what it means to focus on customer needs rather than playing at being god. You all were clearly drunk on power.... and I abandoned you. I had nothing to do with you. I never recommended your hardware, I told the brutal truth of my experiences with your company and my reasons for the boycott of your services far and wide. Primarily I made it clear that any company who abused those who had been witless enough to be a fan of your distorted sense of customer care deserved all the abuse you so readily dished out. Handspring had it right. They appreciated their customers. The looked at market demand and responded with the addition of necessary ideas into the next generation of handhelds. If there was a problem, they didn’t backpeddle furiously or withhold updates to make something work, they did what would serve their customers and make them WANT to buy more product. I can’t for the life of me fathom what impels you to flat out refuse something that would boost your sales of the Treo 600 like adding wifi capability. (without advertising... which of course you don't bother to do in anything less than a half-ass sort of way.) And trying to cram that absolute waste of parts like the Zire 71 down our throats just makes me mourn for the death of Handspring. At this point, I am seriously regretting my purchase of my unit and am actively seeking a replacement for it. I highly recommend that you reconsider your decision for your refusal to enable 802.11b for the Treo 600 and other units. I don’t appreciate your condescension, your arrogant and almost constant abuse of your customers and I will not tolerate this treatment AGAIN. I will await your reply then make my decision. You know, I had a serious beef with Palm years ago when I was a big proponent for them.. they, of course, treated me like total dirt and I abandoned them for greener pastures. Handspring. Well, since then, as you know, the dark side has taken over the light side and the uiniverse is in an imbalance again. "The big catch is that it only works with a single handheld, palmOne’s Zire 71. It won’t work with any other Palm, not even with the newer version of the Zire 71, the Zire 72. Why not? Because palmOne won’t release the necessary patch that would make it possible for the WiFi card’s drivers to work in any of the other Palm handhelds that are out there." Frankly, I'm tired of their crap. I'm seriously considering what kind of statement I can make about this (for instance, selling my Treo 600 and going on a shut out of all things palmOne... but I haven't decided yet.) I installed a little app named CallFilter For Treo 600 1.1 (available on PalmGear.com) that allows you to set filters for people/area codes/company names etc. to do specific things, such as play an MP3 you have on your SD card or go straight to voicemail. [NOTE:Optionally plays MP3s for your Ring-Tone (requires Pocket-Tunes V2.1 or greater)but if you registered your Treo600 with Handspring, you had the option of getting this app for free... and Pocket Tunes kicks some serious hiney, go get it NOW.] For example, I have most calls playing an archaic bell telephone sound. Phone numbers that aren't in my contacts play "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K" (from Bill&Ted) And I have a special ringtones for special people... mostly ones that have their names in them, or are their voices talking to me. Its fun. At $29.95, its a bit steep for a palm app, and frankly the GUI could be a bit cleaner, but you aren't a slave to da AT&T man for midi tones and MP3's are so much more easily created.

It always kind of freaks me out when I do any sort of ROM update/upgrade. I mean, really... you are re-burning your ROM and the potential for FUBARing is serious. So saying that, I really haven't ever had anything go drastically wrong with a ROM update, but because I know that I don't know how to squirm out of any errors or problems like I can with most things computer related, it bothers me. But then again I have always been a pretty serious control freak. So when I read all the instructions about the Treo 600 ROM update, I got a little squirmy, but sat happily, firmly in denial as I watched the bar drift across the screen of my Treo. ...and undoing this should it go wrong?

It's a one way ticket, baby. This update does require you to have 6 M free on your device (I had to delete a few things), make sure your battery is fully charged and resist the urge to futz arund with the Treo while it is updating*. While all this was going on, I made myself think about other things... crossed my fingers, made burnt offerings to the various Treo deities and occasionally glance casually to see what is going on. It installed an app and sync'd my info, launched said app when hotsync was done then started the process of reburning the ROM. (this is where I wanted to touch the Treo because it said not to...). It got through the process and had me reset the device and then go through all the little clicky details of setting the digitizer and the date. Then I resync'd the data onto my Treo. Upgrade features:(snipped from palmOne's site) • Improved data connectivity to browse the web, send and retrieve email and other applications. • Improved rendering of web pages and graphics in the web browser. • Enhanced audio-quality reliability, and reduced audio distortion. • Ability to enable car kit echo cancellation for better audio performance. • Ability to select a privacy mode for incoming SMS to hide the message content and sender information • Software now reflects the new name of our company - palmOne Casualties of war: -->Klondike 2.2 (installed with my Treo 600 software). This was the first thing I noticed not working... I launched it and it reset the Treo. Yarg. Can't live without Klondike. I mailed the guy(s?) at ElectronHut and they promptly mailed me back and said: The backup conduit has a bug in it which corrupts an application's code segment under certain circumstances. Klondike unfortunately is affected by this bug, so when the firmware update backs up and restores your apps, it corrupts Klondike in the process. Simply re-install Klondike from the CD that came with your Treo 600 and it will work fine. Do not install the copy of Klondike from your palm backup directory, that is the copy that was corrupted by the firmware update. ...and that worked. Of course, after I did all of this, palmOne now has a post-update FAQ.

So far so good. 3 days since I did the update and the Treo is humming away nicely. Aquapac PDA Wallet Case This is cool... I like the playthrough* capability, however, I don't know that the Treo's antenna would fit in this case and I only saw one size for this case. I'll have to go down to REI and have a look-see... Shopping; such a hardship, I know. *Playthrough: a term I used when I used to review cases. It means that you can use the device without having to take it out of the case. This is especially handy on something that is supposed to be waterproof (also crud proof).

It kinda irks me that I have to invoke the gods of mMode (AT&T) to add a ringtone to my Treo. Here are the instructions on adding ringtones from the Handspring site: How To: Get MIDI ringtones on your Treo smartphone As you may know, ringtones use the MIDI format (more info). Once you've decided on a MIDI ringtone, here's how to get it on your Treo smartphone. 1. Email the file to yourself If you've composed a MIDI file on your desktop computer, send the file as an email attachment to yourself. Then check your email on Treo, and open the attachment. This works with the Mail application on Treo 600 GSM and may work with other attachment-handling email clients such as SnapperMail. Some Palm OS applications are not able to handle attachments; check your email documentation for more information. 2. Download from the web If you want to download a MIDI file from the web, you can do it directly, using the built-in web browser on your Treo. The MIDI file will appear as a link. Tap on it to download. Note: you cannot use a MIDI file greater than 64 KB as a ringtone. You'll receive an alert if you try to download a MIDI file larger than 64 KB. You can choose to download it, but you won't be able to play it. 3. Beaming If a friend has a great ringtone on the same model of Treo smartphone, they can beam it to you. Launch the Preferences application, and choose Sound from the upper right corner. Choose the Tones box. At the bottom of the screen, choose Manage. Highlight a tone, and choose Send. In the Send With dialog, choose Beam. Can I HotSync a MIDI file onto my device? No. In order to be integrated properly into the MIDI Ring Tones database, the MIDI file must be received as an email attachment, beamed, or a downloaded from web page. Can I save a MIDI file on an SD card and transfer it to my device? No. Again, the MIDI file has to be properly integrated into the MIDI Ring Tones database. The only way this can happen is to download it from a web page, or receive it as an email attachment or beamed item.

And while I understand that there are some people who have problems with behaving (flog them) but just replacing the camera with a plug and leaving the price 'as is' is not a good business decision, nor is it the way to deal with wanks who cheat with their cameras. Handspring Treo 610 To Get Bluetooth I know. Bluetooth is supposed to be a good thing. In fact, recently in a fit of foresight, I bought a Bluetooth adaptor at Fry's for an insanely good price ($20 after rebate-I love me some good rebate action...) and I don't even have anything that uses Bluetooth, though there is a headset that has an adapt-y thingy that lets you use it as a regular set of earphones rather than be limited to it being a phone headset that I am pondering. All that aside, I still can't bring myself to be so excited about it. Probably its because in the dark ages of Palm based computing, I sat through years (literally) of listening to engineers brag about how exciting this new technology that unites the world in peace and harmony and makes cute and fuzzy kittens rain from the sky. So, I'm pretty much just burnt out on waiting for amazing things to happen with [insert name of product here] and Bluetooth. (Though this whole trend in England of hooking up for hot anonymous monkey love was kind of funny (in a 'please wear a condom, y'all.' kind of way.)) Just give me Wi-Fi and I'll stop whining so much... maybe. =;)
