Using a Treo smartphone as a 'tethered' modem for a laptop

palmOne - Support - Knowledge Library "Using a Treo smartphone as a 'tethered' modem for a laptop It is possible to connect your Treo smartphone to a laptop computer, and use the Treo's internal modem to supply an Internet connection to the laptop. However, we did not build the capability into the Treo smartphone. You'll need third-party software do to it."

mVoiceMail

Geekzone, mobile forums: "mVoiceMail is essentially a player for WAV and GSM files attached to e-mail messages. Many mobile service providers allow users to configure voice mail service on landline at office or home to be forwarded to regular e-mail account as WAV/GSM files. When this setup is in place and someone leaves a voice mail user will receive an e-mail with the voice mail attached as an encoded audio file - and mVoiceMail can be used to play it. mVoiceMail is implemented as an OS extension enabling the user to play sound files in WAV and GSM format from any PalmOS application that can properly handle file attachments. mVoiceMail

Features:

  • Support for WAV and GSM encoded files
  • Seamlessly integrated with most e-mail clients, including Treo Mail, GoodLink Email and SnapperMail
  • Easy to use UI
  • Optimized for Treo 600 "

Palm Store - Wireless Keyboard

Palm Store - Wireless Keyboard: "Model Number: P10946U One keyboard that works with all current Palm" Yes, that's all very well and good, but does this work with the Treo 600? I would assume so, since its an IR protocol, the Treo 600 has the right OS, but is there something that is inherently missing from Hanndspring (a.k.a the bastard stepchild of Palm) that is in the PalmOne devices. This enquiring, and somewhat fixated on wifi, mind wants to know...

I still don't care about Bluetooth.

TreoCentral: "the new Treo 650 is supposed to come with Bluetooth built-in."
Bluetooth range is too short, I want to be able to connect directly to the web (without getting shafted by ATT pricing for web access) and bluetooth is easily hijacked.

Another Treo Model Coming..

Another Treo Model Coming.. I have absolutely no idea where this idea came from... heh. The mind boggles.

I've watched a full length movie...

on my Treo today (Truth About Cats and Dogs) and it didn't even put a tiny dent into my battery life. This is so cool. The only thing that I have seen as an issue so far is that occasionally the movies (.avi format) on my card get corrupted and I have to re-copy them onto the card from the computer. It really isn't a big deal, and it also might be from all the messing about I'm doing testing different sizes and such, but it is possible.

Watching DVD's on my Treo...

Well, what do you know... I'm watching a movie on my Treo. I got PocketDVD, MMPlayer (the Treo skin sucks, by the way) and am happily encoding my DVD's for viewing on the Treo. The settings I use to encode the movie are 272x176(48k pixels 160x160). My friend Tex has a Tungsten C and he uses 320x217 or so for his screen. (NOTE:We have since switched both to the same setting, its a lot faster and the visible difference isn't all that great. The tradeoff is definitely in favor of performance.) There are distinct differences between the units. I also set my viewer in MMPlayer for best fit in the full screen mode and it looks really nice. No skipping, the sound is great (but the Treo has some seriously good speaker action... compared to the Tungsten, its amazing.) Here is their set of instructions on optimizing the output for your purposes. I found a PQI 1 gig SD card the other day fro $109 (though Amazon has a 512 SD card, I didn't see a 1 gig version) and I can probably fit 10 movies on the card easily. I'll put some miscellaneous sitcom episodes on there, too. (and a note about transferring the resultant files to your SD card: their instructions [here]. "We recommend to use a memory card reader to copy & paste the output file into your Palm. This can be several times faster than Hotsync." Heh, I think they mean several million times faster... 1 MP3 file copying via HotSync takes a LONG TIME to copy and that's only about 3M. Can you imagine how log 80M takes? But his has wifi and mine doesn't. grr.

How is it that I missed this blog?

treonauts A man after my own heart... (though admittedly, he's probably a little less bitter about the whole wifi thing... =;) ) ...and frankly, looking at the effort and passion he puts into this, should I really bother with my little blog here? OK y'all, this is where viewer feedback comes in handy... you decide if should soldier on with my Treo 600 blog or not. I'll make a decision in 2 weeks. You can either email or post in comments. Thanks.

Customers can also create team lists that can be used to facilitate instant conference calling with up to 10 participants at any one time. Talk Now can also be switched to silent mode to ensure that people in the vicinity are not disturbed."
